Stump Grinding

Professional Stump Grinding — Below-Grade & Cleaned

Stump grinding turns a stump from a permanent obstacle into mulch and a flat lawn. We grind below grade (typically 6-12 inches below soil level) so you can reseed, sod, or replant directly over the old stump location. Pricing is per stump-inch (measured at ground level diameter), with no surprise fees — including in Lithonia and other Stone Mountain-area lots where bedrock is shallow.

When you need this service

When stump grinding is the right call

  • After tree removal, to reclaim the area for landscaping or grass
  • Old stumps becoming a hazard for mowers, kids, or foot traffic
  • Termite or carpenter-ant nests in decaying stumps near the home
  • Selling a property and needing clean curb appeal
  • Replanting in the same location (we grind extra-deep for replant)

Our process

How a Heflin stump grinding job runs

  1. 1

    Measure + quote

We measure stump-inches at ground level and provide a per-inch quote that includes cleanup. For Lithonia and other shallow-bedrock properties, we include rock-encounter language in the quote so there are no surprise fees.

  2. 2

    Locate utilities

For stumps near the home or along property lines, we call 811 and confirm utility location before grinding. This is non-negotiable on every job.

  3. 3

    Grind below grade

Standard depth is 6-12 inches below soil level — enough for sod, reseeding, or shallow replanting. For replant in the same spot we grind 18-24 inches and remove the chips.

  4. 4

    Cleanup

Mulch chips backfilled into the grind hole (which composts to soil over time) or hauled off per your preference. Surface cleanup (rake, blow) included.

FAQs

Stump Grinding FAQs

How much does stump grinding cost?

Most metro Atlanta stump-grinding jobs run $9-$15 per stump-inch (diameter at ground level), with a typical minimum of $150-$200 per visit. Multi-stump jobs come down per-inch. We will quote your specific job for free.

How deep do you grind a stump?

Standard grind is 6-12 inches below soil level — enough for sod, reseeding, or shallow landscape planting. For replanting a tree in the same location, we go 18-24 inches and remove chips. Tell us your end-use and we set depth accordingly.

What about rocks under the stump?

On Lithonia and Stone Mountain-area properties where bedrock is shallow, we hit rock on a meaningful percentage of jobs. We come prepared with rock-spec teeth and we price the estimate with rock-encounter language built in. If we hit rock and stop above the standard depth, we tell you before the crew leaves and we adjust the bill — no surprise fees.

Is stump grinding the same as stump removal?

No. Grinding turns the stump and shallow roots into mulch but leaves the deeper root mass in the ground (where it composts over years). Stump removal physically excavates the entire root ball. Grinding is faster and cheaper. Removal is needed when you want zero root material left (e.g. for a new foundation pour). See our stump removal page.

Can I plant a new tree where the old stump was?

Yes — we grind extra-deep (18-24 inches) and remove chips for replant jobs. For best results we recommend waiting 4-8 weeks after grinding for any leftover root material to settle, then planting per our tree-planting guidance.
