Stump Removal
Stump Removal — Full Excavation, Root Ball Out
Stump removal is the heavier-duty cousin of stump grinding. Where grinding turns the visible stump into mulch and leaves the root mass to compost in place, removal physically excavates the stump and root ball — leaving a clean hole for a foundation pour, a deck footing, or a brand-new tree. It is more expensive than grinding and slower, but it is the right answer when you need zero root material in the ground.
When you need this service
When stump removal is the right call
- New construction or addition where foundation footings need clean soil
- Deck or patio installation directly over the old tree footprint
- Hardscape (driveway expansion, retaining wall) over the stump area
- Replanting a large new tree in the same exact location
- Termite remediation requiring full root removal
Our process
How a Heflin stump removal job runs
- 1
Site assessment + quote
We assess stump diameter, root mass, soil type, and access for excavation equipment. Quote includes excavation, root removal, hauling, and backfill if you want it.
- 2
811 + utility locate
Mandatory before any excavation work near a house or utility line. We do not skip this.
- 3
Excavation
Tracked excavation equipment removes the stump and root ball as a unit. For larger trees we may grind first to expose the root mass, then excavate.
- 4
Cleanup + backfill
Stump and root material hauled off-site. Backfill with clean fill or topsoil per your spec, leaving the area ready for whatever comes next (foundation, deck, replant, sod).
What's included
Standard scope
- 811 utility locate
- Full root-ball excavation
- Off-site haul-off of stump and roots
- Backfill with clean fill or topsoil (specified at quote)
- Surface grading
Pricing
What it costs
Stump removal typically runs $400-$2,500 per stump in metro Atlanta depending on stump diameter, root mass, soil conditions, and equipment access. Significantly more expensive than grinding because of the labor and equipment involved. We recommend grinding when grinding is enough — and removal when removal is required.

Where we offer Stump Removal
Heflin handles stump removal across 60+ ZIP codes in metro Atlanta. Each city has its own conditions — see the city pages for local context.
-
Stump Removal in Decatur →
Decatur's 2022 Tree Canopy Conservation Ordinance changed how healthy-tree removals work — most homeowners don't know.
-
Stump Removal in Atlanta →
Atlanta's tree canopy averages 47.9% but ranges from 13% to 78% — every NPU is a different job.
-
Stump Removal in Buckhead →
Buckhead is white-glove tree work — mature specimen oaks, tight estate access, and HOA review boards on top of City of Atlanta permitting.
-
Stump Removal in Stone Mountain →
Stone Mountain is loblolly-pine country — and these pines are root-plate failure risks, not crown failures, after wet seasons.
-
Stump Removal in Lithonia →
Lithonia sits on Lithonia gneiss — granite-family rock close to the surface, which means trees here grow shallower roots than the rest of DeKalb. That changes how cabling and removal work.
-
Stump Removal in Tucker →
Tucker's residential subdivisions were heavily planted with Bradford pears in the 1990s and 2000s. That cohort is now hitting structural-failure age — and Tucker has more failing Bradford pears than any other ZIP we serve.
-
Stump Removal in Conyers →
Conyers and Rockdale County have meaningfully looser tree-removal regulations than DeKalb or Atlanta — and a much higher share of agricultural-edge and large-lot work.
-
Stump Removal in Snellville →
Snellville is one big subdivision belt — and the trees are aging in lockstep. Whole-block coordination is more efficient than property-by-property work.
-
Stump Removal in Brookhaven →
Brookhaven incorporated in 2012 and adopted its own tree ordinance — distinct from DeKalb County. Out-of-area crews routinely apply the wrong code, which costs Brookhaven homeowners money.
-
Stump Removal in Midtown Atlanta →
Midtown is tight-access streetscape work — narrow lots, parking constraints, high foot traffic, and the City of Atlanta's most expensive recompense exposure for specimen trees.
