About Heflin
A family tree service. In Decatur. Since 2004.
Heflin Tree Service is the rare metro Atlanta tree company that lives where you live. Our shop is at 3358 Kelley Chapel Rd in Decatur — same address as our home neighborhood. We have run this business under the same family ownership for 20+ years, and we are one of the only Black-owned, women-owned, fully insured tree services serving DeKalb, Fulton, Clayton, Gwinnett, and Rockdale counties from a single Decatur location.
Why we started — and why we stayed local
The Heflin family has worked metro Atlanta trees in some form for three generations. What changed in 2004 is that we set up shop as a fully insured LLC and started taking jobs under our own name. We chose Kelley Chapel Rd in Decatur because that is where we live, where our kids go to school, and where we know the canopy block by block. Most of our crew lives within ten miles of our shop. When we say "local," we mean it structurally — not as marketing copy.
Black-owned + women-owned (and what that actually means)
Tree service is one of the least diverse trades in the country — fewer than 3% of US tree care firms are Black-owned, and far fewer than that are women-owned. Heflin is both. We do not lead with this for marketing. We lead with it because (1) it makes us eligible for MWBE-set-aside contracts with Atlanta, DeKalb, Fulton, and the State of Georgia, and (2) HOAs and commercial property managers running diverse-supplier programs are actively looking for crews like ours. What we do well
- · Removal of structurally compromised trees — our most common call. We assess before we cut.
- · Storm response across metro Atlanta. We were on calls within hours of Helene's Sept 2024 landfall.
- · Stump grinding and removal — same-day if equipment is available.
- · Cabling + bracing for specimen trees worth saving.
- · Decatur Tree Canopy Conservation Ordinance compliance — we know it, we file the paperwork, we replace the canopy.
- · Land clearing for development and agricultural-edge work.
What we will not do
- · Topping. It kills the tree, voids structural integrity, and is below ANSI A300 standard.
- · Cash-only side work without a written estimate, insurance certificate, and address on file.
- · Pressure-sales. We give you a written quote and walk away. You decide.
- · Removal of a healthy, structurally sound tree just because someone "doesn't want it." We will, however, refer you to a different option (cabling, structural prune, or a written second opinion).
Insurance + paperwork
Heflin Tree Service LLC carries general liability and workers' compensation insurance. Certificates of insurance are available on request — name us as a Certificate Holder if you are a property manager. We file Decatur, Atlanta, and DeKalb County tree-removal paperwork as part of standard scope, not as an upcharge. We are happy to provide a W-9, a COI, and a vendor packet for any commercial or HOA client.
A note on competition
Some of our competitors are great. Some are out-of-town franchises that send crews to Decatur once a week. We are not the cheapest in metro Atlanta. We are the most local. If you want a $200 cash removal from a guy with a chainsaw, you can find one on Craigslist. If you want a written assessment, full insurance, code-compliant paperwork, and a crew that can be at your house in 90 minutes — that is what we do.
