Stump Grinding in Atlanta, GA

Atlanta stump grinding is often the closing chapter of a recompense-fee removal. Once the tree is gone and the replacement plant is filed, the stump still needs to come out. We grind to plant-ready depth (12-18 inches) when the replacement tree will go in the same spot.

Atlanta context

About Atlanta

Atlanta is the "City in the Forest," with one of the highest urban tree canopies in the United States. But that 47.9% citywide average hides enormous variation: Audubon Forest sits at 78% canopy while Adair Park is closer to 25%. We work all of Atlanta — every NPU, every ZIP — and the right approach in Buckhead is not the right approach in Pittsburgh. Heflin Tree Service handles Atlanta-wide tree removal, trimming, emergency response, and ordinance work, with full handling of the City of Atlanta Arborist Division permitting process.

Our process

How we approach stump grinding

Stump grinding turns a stump from a permanent obstacle into mulch and a flat lawn. We grind below grade (typically 6-12 inches below soil level) so you can reseed, sod, or replant directly over the old stump location. Pricing is per stump-inch (measured at ground level diameter), with no surprise fees — including in Lithonia and other Stone Mountain-area lots where bedrock is shallow.

  1. 1

    Measure + quote

We measure stump-inches at ground level and provide a per-inch quote that includes cleanup. For Lithonia and other shallow-bedrock properties, we include rock-encounter language in the quote so there are no surprise fees.

  2. 2

    Locate utilities

For stumps near the home or along property lines, we call 811 and confirm utility location before grinding. This is non-negotiable on every job.

  3. 3

    Grind below grade

Standard depth is 6-12 inches below soil level — enough for sod, reseeding, or shallow replanting. For replant in the same spot we grind 18-24 inches and remove the chips.

  4. 4

    Cleanup

Mulch chips backfilled into the grind hole (which composts to soil over time) or hauled off per your preference. Surface cleanup (rake, blow) included.
